A Guide to Fashion In The 1960's
![]() |
The sixties were a turbulent time that were filled with lots of changes. Fashion in the 1960's was colorful, rebellious and different than anything seen prior. The conservative look of the 50's was gone and a new era began. Here are just some of the top trends in this iconic decade: Mini Skirts – The miniskirt became popular in the 1960's. More often than not, the miniskirt was worn with thigh high boots, often in white. This look was made popular by Nancy Sinatra and sported by women everywhere.
Bell Bottoms – Bell bottom pants, often made of denim or polyester, were big in the 60's. These type of pants were fitted at the waist and thighs, but flared dramatically at the shins and ankles. The bell shape lent itself to the name of these popular pants that are still worn today with less flaring.
Caftans – Housewives often sported the caftan, a shapeless dress-like clothing item that often came in bright floral prints and colors. The caftan was comfortable and at the time, fashionable. It also hid figure imperfections and gave the perfect amount of coverage for the housewife of the sixties.
Beatnik Style – A look at fashion in the 1960's isn't complete without a mention of the beatnik style. Black clothing, slim pants, turtlenecks and berets made the beatnik look what it was in the 60's.
Bright Colors and Florals – Bright and neon colors like tangerine, fuschia and lime were hot in the 60's, and often seen on pants, tops and dresses adorned with large floral prints.
Geometric Prints – Another hot print was the geometric look in black and white. Optical illusion inspired clothing in black and white was extremely popular and was often worn with the thigh high white boots that were so popular with miniskirts.
The Bouffant – The bouffant, or beehive, was one hairstyle that was hot for women in the 60's. The bigger, the better! This hairstyle was in a high dome shape on top the head and held together with an immense amount of hairspray, often the old standby Aqua Net.
Long Hair – The opposite of the bouffant, long hair was an integral part of fashion in the 1960's for both men and women. The group of people deemed hippies wore hair as long as they could grow it. This trend even inspired the popular musical called what else? Hair!
The Ethnic Look – Shimmery, floaty fabrics and interesting prints were the hallmark of the ethnic look. Middle Eastern, African and Asian styles made their way to America and were often sported with rows of beaded jewelry.
